Repurpose an old mermaid t-shirt to be your go-to beach tote.
1 Cut the sleeves and neck off the t-shirt.
2 Turn the shirt inside out and cut small slits along the bottom. Tie the ends together in two knots so you have a row of knots along the bottom.
3 Turn the shirt right side out. Thread your needle and use it to fasten the charms to the outside of the bag.
4 Pack your bag full of gadgets and gizmos and head to the beach!
The Sci Behind the DIY
This hack doesn’t just result in a fashionable bag; it also helps cut down on the world’s waste. According to the EPA, 10.5 million tons of textile waste ended up in landfills. Depending on the material they’re made of, clothes can take 30-40 years to decompose. During this decomposition process, the clothes release methane, which can cause further harm to the environment. By giving old clothes a second life, your maker is learning the importance of preserving the earth’s resources and developing more eco-friendly habits.
