Enjoying fresh-baked treats together is just the icing on this activity! We’re melting together two of our favorites—math and science—to help your child acquire a taste for both.
1 In a large bowl, add cake mix, eggs, water, and vegetable oil. Beat until smooth.
2 Pour the batter into the cake pop machine and bake into cake balls.
3 Turn the chocolate candies into delicious DIY frosting simply by melting them. We suggest using a stove to heat them within a boiling pot of water, but a microwave will also work.
4 Insert sticks into cooled cake balls, frost generously, and add edible glitter!
The Sci Behind the DIY
Children love watching chemical reactions in the kitchen. Just like magic, liquids turn to solids, the batter turns to cake and frosting fosters imagination (especially when glitter and other toppings are involved).
A simple recipe can teach your little ones how to follow directions and process information. Measuring is a critical skill in the fields of chemistry, engineering and math, so be sure to encourage your kiddo to be in charge of the measuring cups as you gather ingredients. Let them pour and make sure they know why the measuring lines exist.
You can explain why chocolate melts: because it contains cocoa butter, which has different crystals that become liquid when exposed to heat. Cocoa butter is a fatty substance and the more cocoa butter (fat) chocolate contains, the faster it will break down and “melt,” like ice cream on a hot sidewalk or our hearts in the presence of a puppy.
